Simon Murray
Group chairman
Mr. Murray is the Chairman of the Mercantile Maritime Group of Companies. Having lived in Asia for over 40 years, he has extensive experience investing and operating in finance, transportation, natural resources, infrastructure and power sectors. Mr. Murray is the founder of SMC China Capital and is currently the Executive Chairman of GEMS.
Prior to founding SMC and GEMS Mr. Murray was the Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa, responsible for developing the Group’s energy business through the acquisition of Hong Kong Electric and Husky Oil. He helped transform the Group into the world’s leading port operator. Mr. Murray has served on the advisory board of many companies including Gulf Keystone Petroleum, Cheung Kong Holdings, Compagine Financiere Richemont SA, Essary Energy, IRC Limited, Orient Overseas. He was the Chairman of Glencore, Vodafone, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, Vivendi Universal, Unisor SA, Hermes, General Electric USA, Macquarie Bank, N.M. Rothschild, and Bain & Co.
Simon Murray has been awarded the CBE by H.M. The Queen and the Order of Merit of the French Republic.
